I attended Microsoft’s Partners in Learning briefing. The purpose of the briefing was to share key learnings from the Partners in Learning projects with the education community and equip attendees with practical resources to be implemented in their organizations. They aimed to create a participatory environment for investigation and among the multiple perspectives in the room which included urban to rural, US to international, teacher to Superintendent making it an ideal setting for robust dialogue. Day 1: Vision & Planning – School of the Future Case Study

Developing a Vision - Mary Cullinane, Microsoft
Can everyone involved in your effort articulate the vision? Is everyone on the same page? Get a glimpse inside the visioning method for the School of the Future and talk about how and why you might implement it.

Using a Process - Mary Cullinane, Microsoft
To guide the creation of the School of the Future, the 6i process was developed. This session will take you through its use in Philadelphia and offer guidance as to how you can use it in your organization.

People & Hiring - Stacey Rainey, Microsoft
Microsoft follows a very particular hiring process resulting in high acceptance rates and low turnover. Many aspects of Microsoft’s people strategy were utilized during the School of the Future’s hiring – understand how you can update your approach.

Public Private Partnerships - Anthony Salcito, Microsoft
Absolutely critical to the success of the SOF project were the multitude of partners involved. Schools, community organizations, government and the private sector all have a role to play. This experience demonstrated a new type of partnership for Microsoft – see why we have changed our approach.

Scaling Success - Allyson Knox, Microsoft & Chris Dede, Harvard University Graduate School of Education
Scaling-up an education innovation means being able to adapt an innovation in almost any education context. How do you do this? What are the steps and traps? How can technology help? This session will help you answer these questions, become familiar with a scale framework, and come away with a scale planning process.

Day 2: Innovation & Technology – Multiple Case Studies

The Innovative Teachers Network - Marion Ginopolis, Consultant
The Innovative Teachers Network is a portal that allows educators to collaborate, and share best practices around 21st century learning. This session will introduce you to the Network, describe the activities available for teachers, and how your customers can leverage.

Florida’s Sunshine Connection Dashboard - Lisa Faia, Microsoft & Dave Grobleski, Florida Department of Education
Learn how the Florida Department of Education is partnering with Microsoft US Partners in Learning to create a collaborative environment to share resources and relevant student data. Explore the technical architecture including identity management, security, business intelligence and tools utilized to create this innovative statewide teacher portal.

SOF Technical Overview, including Portal & OneNote - Tony Franklin, Microsoft
The specific technology used at the SOF, including demonstrations of the Portal and One Note applications will be covered during this session. In addition to “what specific technology”, connections will be made to the “why technology” which should always be answered first.

Day 3: 21st Century Curriculums & Resources

MI LIFE - Allyson Knox, Microsoft & Marion Ginopolis, Consultant
This session will introduce you to the new The Michigan Leadership Improvement Framework Endorsement or MI-LIFE developed through Michigan Partners in Learning. MI-LIFE is a stimulating, inspiring and challenging course designed for education administrators. The courses in the MI-LIFE curriculum have been developed by a core faculty comprised of Michigan educators who have had practical experience in the "real" world of school leadership and understand the day-to-day workings of schools. While the courses are research based, they are practical and applicable to the busy leader's daily life. It provides technology-rich courses that, when successfully completed, will earn school leaders a Michigan Leadership Improvement Framework Endorsement and 18 State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs.)

Career Forward - Allyson Knox, Microsoft & Jamey Fitzpatrick, Michigan Department of Education
This session will introduce you to the new online course for students called Career Forward (cFWD). cFWD is designed to help students fulfill Michigan’s new online learning high school graduation requirement (the first state in the US to make online learning a law). This program contains about 20 hour-long online sessions using personal reflection and activities and gives each student an independent exploration of the possibilities for their future that will allow them to move on and create an Educational Development Plan (EDP). You will learn about how the course can be deployed to districts outside of Michigan.

School Leader Development - Marion Ginopolis, Consultant
School Leader Development (SLD) is an instructional leadership tool used by educators and their community partners as a framework for thinking about 21st century learning. During this session, you will experience firsthand how the SLD resource works to promote supportive discussions between educators.

Education Competencies - Stacey Rainey, Microsoft
Internally at Microsoft we use a competency wheel as a tool for self guided professional development as well as a resource for the hiring process. An education competency wheel was created by a group of educators for the education community to use in a similar fashion. A demonstration of its use will provide the backdrop for this conversation around the competencies required to be successful in today’s educational environment no matter what your role and how to be sure you are hiring for success.
